You have identified one important step in walking in the will of God: to become aware of the Scriptures which provide the light to see life and its decisions properly. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105
Another step is praying for The Lord’s leading on how to apply the principles and information we have. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all…” James 1:5. (Also, Proverbs 3:5,6) “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” 2Timothy 3:16, 17.
Here is a fundamental principle about God’s will as stated in Jeremiah 29:11: “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plan to give you hope and a future.’” God’s will and intention is to bless for highest good in eternity, despite the appearance of the circumstance.
When you look up the word ‘will’ in a concordance, you will find many Scriptures explaining God’s will. Following is a short compilation of some helpful Scriptures:
“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV It makes sense that a God who is working out the highest good for all people would want us to be grateful no matter what our experience.
“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3 NIV
It makes sense that the God, who loves to bless, has created standards of thought and behavior that would not cause long term destruction and pain in our lives and the lives of others. His standards bring blessings!
“…If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 The will of God according to Jesus, for the followers of Christ, involves a life of sacrifice and giving according to His individual leading and application of Scripture. This faithful life of sacrifice will lead to an amazing privilege of blessing all the families of earth from heavenly glory. Romans 8:18-21
“Be careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:15-20
God’s will is wise—it is the best application of principle in order to accomplish the highest blessing for all in eternity. He does not want us to become intoxicated with literal wine OR the intoxicating philosophies, teachings and thoughts of fallen human beings. He wants us to be filled with HIS power and influence, communicating praise and gratitude to one another and to Him.
“I delight to do Thy will, O my God.” Psalm 40:8
