This incident, recorded both in Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1-4, is an example in practical terms of the way Jesus (and God) looks at giving. The world tends to be impressed with large gifts and grand gestures; the Lord looks at the heart. When Jesus saw this poor widow cast her coins into the Temple treasury, he saw a woman so devoted to God that she willingly gave almost all she had. Rather than looking at the amount of the gift, the Lord saw the intent and desire of her innermost character. Others were giving also. Many rich men had come by and given much larger sums; but proportionate to her means, the widow had given the most of all.

Whether it be time, talent, influence or money, giving is a privilege for the Christian. In some cases, for those who are necessarily engrossed in family and work obligations, giving money may be the only opportunity for service that is open to them. Systematic giving is beneficial to the giver because it keeps service at the forefront of their thoughts. It is one way to manifest their love for the Lord. If one is able, time and talents can also be employed to show our love. He esteems all our gifts according to the spirit with which we give them, rather than the amount of the gift itself.

Jesus wanted the disciples to understand that it is not always the great things we do that God values. Small daily sacrifices and self-denials can also represent our love and devotion to Him. When we look out for the welfare of others by giving time, assistance, monetary gifts, sympathy or whatever they need, we are showing the Father what is in our hearts.

The poor widow’s example of selfless giving and faithfulness has come down through the centuries as a standard of godly sacrifice. Her two coins have represented so much more than their monetary value. They have given us an insight into the mind of our Lord.
