God knows what is best for us through His omniscience, profound wisdom, eternal perspective and meticulously detailed plan that was established before the world was even created. This plan accounts for all of human history and is designed to bring about the best possible long-term outcomes for all of humanity.
God’s Foresight and Eternal Plan
God’s knowledge is proactive, not reactive. He has foresight and a master plan for the reconciliation of all humanity that was in place from the very beginning.
• Plan Predating Creation: God’s plan existed in His mind even before the world was founded. Jesus’ role as the “Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” and the calling of his followers were part of this original design. This demonstrates that God knew the path humanity would take and had already arranged the solution for our ultimate good.
• Vast and Inscrutable Wisdom: The Bible repeatedly states that God’s thoughts and ways are far higher and more complex than ours. What may seem like senseless tragedy or chaos to us is part of a larger, orderly process that God fully comprehends. We can only see the small part of the “parade” in front of us, while God sees the entire event from beginning to end.
• Control Over Time: God operates outside of our human constraints of time. He has “appointed times” for every event and sees His plan unfolding across ages. What feels like a long, painful delay to us is simply a necessary part of His perfect timing. This allows for crucial lessons to be learned and for prophecies to be fulfilled precisely when intended.
God’s knowledge is not just about a grand, impersonal plan; it extends to a deep, personal understanding of each individual. The Scriptures state that God searches and knows our hearts. He understands our thoughts even before we speak them. He knows what we need before we even ask. This intimate knowledge allows Him to tailor experiences for our specific needs and growth.
God’s providence, His overruling care and guidance in our lives, is important to every faithful Christian. He allows experiences—even difficult and painful ones—because He knows they are for our highest spiritual welfare and will ultimately work for our good. He works with our weaknesses and provides what we need to endure and grow.
Even God’s discipline is a sign of His love and favor, not random punishment. Like a loving father, He corrects us for our good, so we can share in His holiness and produce “the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” This correction is based on His perfect knowledge of what we need to learn.
Jesus, being the “Logos” or “Word” who was with God from the beginning, is the primary agent through which God’s knowledge of our best interests is revealed and enacted. Having lived as a human and endured temptations and suffering, Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses. He knows firsthand what we go through and therefore knows how to help us. His entire life was a demonstration of delighting in and perfectly executing God’s will, proving it is the best path.
As our mediator and advocate, Jesus stands between us and God, making reconciliation possible. Through him, we receive grace and mercy, which are essential for navigating our imperfect lives toward the good God has planned for us.
God knows what is best for us because He is our omniscient Creator with a perfect, loving and just plan that has been in operation since before time began. He knows us intimately, guides our lives through His providence, and uses even our hardships to shape us for an eternal future of peace and righteousness.
