Peace is a sense of calm and quiet, without disturbing actions, thoughts or emotions. The PEACE OF GOD is different, and much better, because it comes from the Creator of the universe!Philippians says, (4:7, BSB) “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” The thought behind this scripture is that God’s peace stands guard continually, like a soldier, ready to challenge and eliminate every worrying thought or fear. It calms the heart in times of trouble. This peace is possible for those who have fully devoted their lives to God and following Jesus. For these faithful Christians, the peace of God is a direct result of a personal relationship with Him. They can have peace no matter what happens because they completely trust God. (See Romans 8:28)Jesus had the peace of God because he trusted and obeyed God with all his heart and mind. He constantly communicated in prayer with his Father for understanding and guidance through every experience. In John (see 8:29) he said the Father was with him because he always did what pleased God. Knowing that God was with him and fully trusting God with his life brought the gift of peace. Jesus demonstrated this peace through his gentleness, sympathetic heart and confidence in God’s overall plan.Jesus wanted this same peace for his followers. In John, (14:27, BSB) he said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you…Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.” Jesus needed and appreciated the peace he had while he was tried and tested. The life of a Christian is also filled with trials and difficulties, so they need the peace of God, too. Without it, a Christian can feel unsafe or anxious. But WITH the peace of God, there’s a calming reassurance that everything is under God’s control. After devoting their lives to God and following Jesus, faithful Christians can come to know and maintain the peace of God in these ways: Spending time in prayer. Not only in our most difficult moments, but at all times, we can go to God and pour out our hearts. Psalm (34:15 NLT) says, “The eyes of the LORD watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.”Studying the Bible. In challenging experiences, the Scriptures encourage us to press on and not be afraid. God’s word shows us His love, light and vision. Psalm (119:105, NLT) says, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”Spending time with others who love God and Jesus. It strengthens our faith to hear how God is leading others through hard experiences. Hebrews (10:25, NLT) says, “And let us not neglect our meeting together…but encourage one another…” So, what is the peace of God? It’s a sense of reassurance and calmness that comes from having a personal relationship with God through Jesus. The peace of God is precious and has great value. It guards the mind against worrying thoughts. It reassures faithful Christians of God’s divine power, love, wisdom and justice as shown in His wonderful plans for all people. Isaiah (26:3, English Standard Version) says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” The world and its riches can’t give us true peace, but God CAN!
