Today we’re flooded with influences that shape us and our decisions. Social media has gotten so sneaky that we might not even be aware that we’re being influenced, and apps know more about us than we realize. AI and other computer programs target our human nature and are not at all concerned with our relationship with God and Jesus. Some of these influences CAN be positive and friendly, but is that how we should be spending our time? To manage these influences, we can carefully consider what we allow into our lives. Let’s call these “inputs.”What do I allow to influence me? In other words, how do I spend my time? What content do I watch on social media and for how long? What video games do I play? What music do I listen to? What kinds of friends do I hang out with? 1 Corinthians says, (15:33, NIV) “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.”What do I think about? Proverbs (23:7, NKJ) says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” In other words, a person’s inner thoughts show their true character. How do we handle the thoughts that come into our minds? When we have a not-so-nice thought, do we dismiss it or dwell on it? Our inputs affect our “outputs,” which is what we say and do. Our outputs influence both ourselves and others. How do I influence others? Hebrews (10:24, NLT) says, “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.” Do I inspire others to share and be kind? Is my attitude lifting up those around me? A sincere smile is contagious – it can spread cheerfulness! How do I act? Am I quick to recognize if a friend or classmate needs help, and do I offer help if possible? Am I respectful towards my parents and teachers? Galatians says (6:9, NLT) “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.” What do I say? Do I use nice words when I speak to others? In Luke (6:45, NLT) Jesus said, “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” Our heart influences our thoughts. If our thoughts are nice, our words will be nice – but unfortunately the opposite is true, too! So, how do we control what influences us? We can consider our inputs and outputs. We can control what we put into our mind and heart – whether it’s the videos we choose to watch or the friends we choose to hang out with. If we spend too much time on social media, let’s try setting a timer so we know when to stop. We can actively dismiss any thoughts or words that tear others down. Let’s be a POSITIVE influence on others!
