After God gave the nation of Israel the Ten Commandments, Moses told them, "The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken." Deuteronomy 18:15
There are over a hundred references in the entire Old Testament to that Prophet. Specifically in book of Daniel, the role of that Prophet is referred to as Messiah. Daniel predicted the date of the birth of Jesus by using the Biblical method of time measurement. "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks." Daniel 9:25
The Jewish people well-understood Daniel’s time prophecy and Luke reported that “… the people were in suspense and waiting expectantly, and everybody reasoned and questioned in their hearts concerning John whether he perhaps might be the Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One." Luke 3:15 (Amplified Bible)
Then the Apostle Peter clearly identified Jesus as that Prophet in Acts 3:19-23 (NIV), “Repent…so that your sins may be wiped out, that the times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you – even Jesus. He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me …you must listen to everything he tells you…”
The people of Israel first learned of the prophecy of Jesus/Prophet/Messiah/Anointed from the Torah and were eagerly anticipating His advent as their Savior.
