God does not really need us as He is self-sufficient, complete, almighty and perfect. Complete perfection could be likened to a circle, having no beginning and no end. Therefore, a perfect being like God does not need anything or anyone.
On the other hand, human beings are God's creation and He created us in His image. We manifest some of God's qualities when we are at our best: love, joy, compassion, justice, wisdom and so on. Humans desire to have children, because we were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). We long to bless children with our love and our lives. So does God; he loved us even while we were sinners.
God is the absolute creator and He enjoys using His love, wisdom, justice and power in the creation process. Revelation 4:11, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Love as a quality generates Love, and what better way to spread Love than by creating children with whom to share this love?
Our fall from grace saddened our Heavenly Father. He manifested His love for us by giving His only begotten Son to save and redeem us.
Does this not prove love? Imagine a human parent willingly sacrificing or having to choose between two sons in order to save one of them. Which human parent could do that? This is not possible for us – this would be such a great heart break. Yet God in His immense love did exactly this for us when sent His Son, Jesus. We need God, and we need His love like a flower needs the sun to grow.
God is our Architect; he created our hearts to be able to love, the most beautiful feeling for which all pain is worthy to be endured.
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 John 4:8
