Unfortunately, we have no photographs of Jesus, so we don’t really know. However, we can make some reasonable guesses based on what the Bible tells us about him and his life.
Since Jesus was a carpenter, he probably had strong arms. In Matthew (21:12) he showed strength when he turned over the tables of the money changers in the temple. He walked many miles during his ministry, so we can imagine that he was in good physical shape.
It was a custom for Jewish men to have a beard. Isaiah (50:6) prophesies how Jesus’ beard would be cruelly pulled during his trial, the night before his crucifixion.
We don’t think he had long hair because 1 Cor (11:14) says, “…if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him.”
Jesus lived in a part of the world that was dry with lots of sunshine, so we might assume he had tanned skin.
Jesus was a warm-hearted and tender person, and many people looked to him for comfort and healing, so his facial expressions most likely were pleasant and kind.
Ultimately, it’s not so important that we know what Jesus looked like, because 1 Sam (16:7) tells us, “…people look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
So, what did Jesus look like? We don’t know for sure, but we do know that God reads our hearts and considers the inside to be more important than the outside!
