Since we do not live in Nigeria, we cannot comment on the specific effects of greed in that country. However, we can comment on the consequences of greed and how God views greed.
Greed by definition is selfishness and a focus on one's self. It directly violates God’s law to “love your neighbor as yourself…” Mark 12:33.
Greed ignores the just needs of others. For example, a greedy employer does not pay his workers a sufficient wage to live on. God directly addresses this injustice in James 5:1-5 (NIV):
“Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.”
One of the sins of Sodom was having abundance but not helping the needy. For this and other sins, God destroyed the city.
Ezekiel 16:49 (NIV), “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.”
All these injustices will be ended with Armageddon. The purpose of Armageddon is to destroy the evil systems and to humble mankind. Then when Christ establishes His earthly reign, mankind will rejoice under His righteous, just, and loving rule!
Daniel 2:44 (NIV), “In the time of those kings (present unjust governments), the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.”
