The shortest answer is 'Yes'.
The full story is more complicated as outlined in the Bible. God created spirits as well as all the examples of earthly life we can see. In Isa. 45:12, God states, “I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.” All of the spirit creation were perfect when first created. They were also given freedom of choice.
At some point later, the mighty angel, Lucifer allowed pride to grow in his character to the point of becoming the enemy of God. The record of this decline is found in Isa. 14:12, 13, “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north.”
Once Lucifer became Satan, the enemy of God, he recruited other angels to join his rebellion. The result of this rebellion against God was the great Flood described in Genesis. After the Flood, the bad spirits were restricted by God in the amount of contact they could initiate with the human race.
The bad, or evil spirits have been able to influence the affairs of human beings through various methods, such as mediums, seances, etc. The influence of these beings is harmful and will not result in any ultimate good. The Bible forbids contact with evil spirits in many places and warns of the harm that comes from their influence. Lev. 19:31, Isa.29:4, Jude 1:6
In recent times, the influence of spiritual evil has increased to the point where television, movies, music and books have downplayed the danger and confused people's thinking, as well as presenting false information and lies in an effort to make them appear harmless. The instructions from God are clear: Contact with evil spirits is harmful and forbidden.
The matter of good spirit beings is much more pleasant. Heb. 1:14- Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? Perhaps, you have heard of 'guardian angels'. There is one very important principle to remember, concerning spirit beings: God is the one who directs what they would do or not do. We can be thankful to God for directing the good spirits to help us, but humans cannot and should not seek out communication with spirits, good or bad, that is for God alone (see Revelation 22:8, 9).
