God's law is very exact: an eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth; a life for a life. (Deuteronomy 19:21) A perfect human being had to be given in exchange for Adam, who disobeyed God. This life could not be that of a sinner, or anyone who makes mistakes, as you and I do. This life could not be that of an angel. It had to be a perfect man, as Adam was before he sinned. Jesus was this perfect man. Matthew 20:28
