Tribulation is from the Latin word tribuluma - a thresher that separates the grain of wheat from the chaff, or waste. Christians are pictured by wheat; and the chaff illustrates the old, useless traits of which we need to rid ourselves. So our troublesome experiences are meant to separate the good, the usable, from that which is worthless. Acts 14:22
