He ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach. (Mark 3:14)

The twelve men chosen to be Jesus' apostles were: Simon Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, Thaddaeus, Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot. Later Paul was chosen by God to replace unworthy Judas. There were never any more substitutions, nor did others take their places when these apostles died. Luke 6:13-16
