Your question has surely been pondered by believers since the beginning of time. The first requirement is believing that God exists, then one must desire to know everything possible about God. Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.”

The next step is learning how to know God. The Bible teaches we must use several methods to comprehend our Creator. These include praying, studying God’s word, and approaching God through Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:17, “Pray without ceasing.”  2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”  John 14:6, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

An essential key to having a relationship with God is understanding the biblical meaning of “faith.” Too often people believe faith is limited to having an unquestioning blind belief. However, the Bible’s definition of faith has two parts. Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Most well-intended Christians have the first part, that of the substance of things hoped. We all long for the precious promises given to us by Jesus and his apostles. Yet, few fully grasp the second part – the evidence of things not seen. Bible faith is not blind. Careful examination of the Scriptures reveals a complete and harmonious plan laid out by God. Numerous prophecies have been fulfilled on the very timetable presented. Learning requires study of God’s word. 1 Thessalonians 5:21, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”  Notice the apostle is not telling us to just blindly take his word for it, but to prove truths by God’s word.

Finally, we need to follow Jesus’s example of total consecration to obey God’s will. Hebrews 10:7, “Then said I, Lo, I come in the volume of the book it is written of me, to do thy will, O God.”  Only God knows what is in our hearts. Do you desire to do His will?
