Yes, intentionally selling a low-quality item while charging a premium price—especially by misrepresenting its value—aligns with what the Bible defines as dishonest gain. In a modern context, we might call it a “scam” or “price gouging,” but the scriptural principles remain the same regardless of the technology used.

The heart of the matter is integrity. In the world of online shopping, it is easy to hide behind a screen, but as followers of Christ, our standard isn’t just what we can get away with, but rather what is pleasing to God. The Bible is surprisingly specific about business ethics.

In the Old Testament, God frequently warned against “unjust scales” or “differing weights.” As we read in Proverbs 11:1, “A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is His delight.” When you represent a product as premium but deliver something of poor quality, you are essentially using a “false balance.” You are taking more value from the customer than you are giving in return.

The “Golden Rule” taught by Jesus in Matthew 7:12 is perhaps the best litmus test for any business decision: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” If you were the customer, expecting a high-end product because of the price tag and the marketing, but received something flimsy or poorly made, how would you feel? If the transaction leaves the buyer feeling cheated or misled, it violates the command to love our neighbors. True Christian character involves being “blameless and innocent,” as Paul encourages in Philippians 2:15, shining as lights in a world that often prioritizes profit over people.

There is nothing wrong with making a profit, but the Bible encourages us to find satisfaction in honest labor. Proverbs 13:11 reminds us that “Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, but he who gathers by labor will increase.” Building a business on “premium” branding for “low-quality” goods is often a short-term strategy that leads to a tarnished reputation and a heavy conscience. Instead, when we provide genuine value, we reflect the character of God, who is the source of all truth and excellence.

We hope these thoughts provide some clarity as you consider how to manage your shop with a “conscience void of offense toward God and toward men” (Acts 24:16).
