Physical pain consumes our thoughts and body. It demands our attention to fix whatever is wrong. Sadly, not all things can be fixed; some pain needs to be endured. Focusing on the scriptures is a helpful way to refocus the mind. Proverbs 17:22 ”A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”
When in pain we realize our own littleness, yet God is close to us when we are in that attitude.
Isaiah 57:15 “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”
Psalms 103:10-17 “…as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth… But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children”
When we are comforted by God, we learn to be more compassionate and give comfort to others. 2 Corinthians 1:3,4 “ Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”
We need to have hope that someday in God’s thousand year kingdom there will be a new heavens and a new earth. (Not a literal but a new society.) By faith we need to grasp these blessings to help lift us above the current difficulties. Here are some promises we look forward to:
Revelation 21:4 “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Isaiah 33:24 “the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick”
Isaiah 25:8 “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces”.
Isaiah 35:10 “And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”
