All Christian are held to the high standard of the law of love. Love teaches that no husband should beat his wife or anyone! James 2:8 (NLT), “…obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
Malachi 2:14-15 (NASB), “…the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant…Take heed then to your spirit, and let no one deal treacherously against the wife of your youth.” God is warning against dealing treacherously in any way against one’s wife. God hates those who do, and who try to cover up that violence. Imagine the Lord hating us for doing something!
Genesis 2:24 teach how a husband should treat his wife: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Deuteronomy 24:5 “When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: [but] he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.” Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”
Jesus requires us to follow a law of love and respect for all men and women. Specifically, Christian men are taught to treat their spouses with respect and love. Colossians 3:19 tells us “Husbands, love [your] wives, and be not bitter against them.” Then in Ephesians 5:28,29 we are taught, “So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.”
The strongest exhortation is in 1 Peter 3:7, “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with [them] according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife…that your prayers be not hindered.” This is a very specific and strong scripture. A man who does not give honor to his wife is in danger of his prayers to God not being heard and recognized. Our prayers are our life…our tie to the Lord God. Imagine having our Lord not hear us when we cry unto him with our hearts because we were not following his direction. It would be tragic.
