God, Himself, wrote the Ten Commandments with His finger on the slabs of stone. So certainly, the Ten Commandments, often referred to as the Law of Moses, are the Law of God. These wonderful statutes outline the principles of God’s love and justice. Almost every society’s standards of human behavior appear to have been greatly influenced by these 10 commandments. However, the entire Law with the sacrifices and ordinances was specifically given to Israel for that specific time in history.
The principles behind God’s laws never vary; yet, some specific laws may become obsolete. For example, in the Garden of Eden, God’s law was, “Do not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.” That law does not apply today.
Similarly, the many ordinances in Israel’s Law Covenant governing health; sin, burnt, grain, and peace offerings; tithing, and sabbath days no longer apply. Colossians 2:16-17 (NKJV), “So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.”
How is Christ the substance? Paul answers this in Hebrews 10. Verses 8-10 (NKJV) read, “… ‘Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You (God) did not desire, nor had pleasure in them’ (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, ‘Behold, I (Jesus) have come to do Your will, O God.’ He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Jesus kept and died to fulfill every detail of the Law, but He introduced the more encompassing concept of the spirit of the Law. Jesus said, “‘And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31 (NKJV)
The one word that embodies God’s law is always LOVE. And we are always to obey God's law for therein is life.
