An adolescent girl is very important. Her simple idealism, faith, hope, and vigor can be a source of encouragement to other believers. She can begin to serve God with her whole being to His glory.
Mary was an adolescent when God favored her to become Jesus’s mother. The LORD was with her. (See Luke 1:28.) As a teenaged girl, she trusted and surrendered to the will of God even though it would threaten her reputation. (Luke 1:35-38.) Mary is a role model for young women.
Jesus told the parable of the ten virgins (in those days, these virgins would have been teens). Why would Jesus choose young women as the main characters of a parable? Because young virgins have characteristics of love, loyalty, devotion, joy, and preparedness. These are qualities which can continue to be nurtured and developed in adolescent girls.
Consider the deacon Philip who had four Christian daughters. Acts 21:8-9 (NKJV), “On the next day we…entered the house of Philip the evangelist, … and stayed with him. Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.” These young women had already been instructed in the scriptures. They were so well-studied and full of faith that they were able to publicly present and defend the Gospel. So, educating adolescent girls is very important.
Finally young women helped Israel gain victory over the Assyrians when the enemy army surrounded Jerusalem. It was the young virgins who sang a joyful song of faith in the midst of a siege! Imagine adolescent girls walking through the streets of Jerusalem singing songs of the victory to bolster the faith of the warriors on the walls. Psalm 46:1-2, 5 (YLT), 1 To the Overseer. — By sons of Korah. 'For the Virgins.' — A song. “God is to us a refuge and strength, A help in adversities found most surely. 2 Therefore we fear not in the changing of earth, And in the slipping of mountains Into the heart of the seas. … 5 God is in her midst — she is not moved, God doth help her at the turn of the morn!…”
Adolescent women have great potential and strengths with which to glorify our wonderful Heavenly Father.
