Much of what God has revealed of Himself comes through an understanding of His divine plan, through his Holy Word. The heights and depths of his wonderful character are seen there!
The biblical account states that God, a Creator, an intelligent First Cause, existed. “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Psalm 90:2). It reveals to us His work and its systematic orderly progress. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1; Hebrews 1:10). We are also told “God is a Spirit” and “No man can see God and live” (John 4:24, 1:18, Exodus 33:20, 1 Timothy 6:16).
The existence of God is a clearly demonstrated truth, the proof of which lies all around us and within us. This one whose wisdom planned and whose power upholds and guides the universe, we instinctively worship and adore. “For in him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28,29). “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are Thy works; and that my soul knows right well” (Psalm 139:14).
His every power speaks of skill beyond our comprehension (Psalms 147:4,5, Isaiah 55:9), except as He has kindly chosen to give us some revelation of Himself. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). “For with Thee is the fountain of life: in Thy light shall we see light” (Psalm 36:9).
The foundation of God’s government is based upon justice and equity. (Psalm 89:14, Romans 2:11, James 1:17). Even though He will never go against His own perfect law of justice, He has made a loving provision for the redemption and restitution of the sinful human race through Jesus Christ, His son. (Romans 3:26, 5:8,18,19, 1 Timothy 2:3-6, Acts 3:19-21) This provision shows us a beautiful manifestation of his character: “…God is love.” 1 John 4:8 (John 3:16, 17; 17:3)
In God’s wisdom, He also has granted mankind liberty of will and desires them to choose righteousness. (Psalm 72:7; Romans 6:16; 2 Peter 3:13; 1 John 3:7)
After the world’s experience with sin and death, all will have the privilege of turning unto God that they may inherit eternal life. (Ezekiel 18:20, 21; Jeremiah 31:29, 30; Revelation 22:17)
God is called “I AM,” “Almighty God,” “Jehovah,” “LORD,” and more. The names by which He reveals Himself makes a wondeful study – please see the Additional Resource below. He is intimately acquainted with those who know Him as their benevolent and loving “Father,” both his angelic sons and those sons who are begotten and led by His spirit (Exodus 3:13,14, 6:2,3, Genesis 17:1, Matthew 6:9, 18:10, Romans 8:14).
Thus, we have before our mental vision the character and attributes of our great God. He is a supreme, intelligent God, in whom wisdom, justice, love and power exist in perfect harmony.
