The Bible was recorded by many authors over a period of a few thousand years. For instance, the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) are believed to have been written by Moses. David wrote the many of the Psalms. King Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes, most of the Proverbs and the Song of Songs. Prophets also carefully recorded the history of Israel and Judah during their lives – as well as memorializing their God-inspired prophecies. Those Old Testament books are titled with their names: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah, Obadiah, Zechariah, Zephaniah, and others. The New Testament was largely written by the Apostle Paul. But the Gospels were recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Apostle Peter wrote two letters (called books), while James and Jude each wrote one.
As you can see, many human authors contributed to writing the Bible. However, we are told that everything written in the Bible was inspired by God. “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). God used humans to write out His words. The human authors wrote with their own styles and personalities, but God overruled what was recorded. Thus, we know with certainty that all Scripture is true and harmonious.
