Worship can mean different things to different people. In the Bible, the words translated worship have the sense of showing respect or reverence, or serving royalty or God. The definition, according to dictionary.com, is “reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred.” Furthermore, the origin of the word helps us understand it better. This word was coined before 900 AD, with the meaning of worthship.
When we worship God, we show Him we recognize His worth is much greater than ours.
So who is God, and why would we want to do this?
Jehovah, the God of the universe, may be characterized as having four main attributes: justice, love, wisdom, and power. Psalm 89:14, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.” Job 36:5, “…God is …mighty in strength and wisdom.” Psalm 62:11,12, "…power belongs to God; and lovingkindness is Yours, O Lord"
How does God use His mighty abilities? To bless! When God’s kingdom comes (remember the Jesus’ prayer, “thy kingdom come”), then “the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert…and the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” Isaiah 35:5, 6, 10
Who are the ransomed who will be so blessed? “…the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for all” 1 Timothy 2:5, 6 All mankind will be ransomed from sin and death and be wonderfully healed.
The more we learn about God, and see His Love, His Wisdom, His Justice, and His Power, the more we love and appreciate Him! This brings us to the point that we just can't hold back praising and worshipping Him! He truly is an AWESOME God!
