The holy spirit has been misunderstood by many Christians who believe it to be a person, a third being equal in power and glory to God. But this is not scriptural. A careful study of the Bible shows the holy spirit is the power and influence of Jehovah God. For example, it was God’s spirit that moved on the face of the waters when He created the earth (Genesis 1:2). His design, wisdom and power made the earth and all living being that dwell here.

His spirit can also work in the life of a believer. However, accepting Jesus as one’s Savior is merely a first step in coming under the influence of God. The Apostle Paul wrote, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:1,2). 

This is a meaningful text that relates to receiving the holy spirit into our lives. After accepting Jesus as our Savior, the next step is to present our lives to God as “a living sacrifice.”  That means we give up our own wills and seek to do only what God wants from us. Paul says this is a “reasonable service.” This begins the process of transforming our minds. That process leads to knowing better the perfect will of God.

After hearing of their love, Paul wrote to the Colossian brethren and said, “We do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” (Colossians 1:9) 

Knowledge of God’s will comes largely through a study of Hiis word. When we understand the principles by which God operates, we can better discern what would be pleasing and acceptable to Him. However, if we neglect His word and follow worldly principles then His spirit cannot guide us. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 admonishes us to “quench not the spirit.” This implies it CAN be quenched, or extinguished, if we do not continue to seek and do God’s will. 

To answer the question, God’s spirit is only effective when we willingly give up our own desires and search for His will in our lives. This is why we must continue to study and meet with others of “like precious faith.” God’s spirit helps us when we ask for His guidance and honestly look for His leadings. At times, it can be difficult to know what God’s will is for us. But, by searching for it based on the guiding principles He provides, we grow and mature in our thinking. Our goal should be to think like Christ. This is an ongoing process that requires discipline and determination.
