The Bible does indeed talk about climate change.

Since Adam’s sin, the earth has been cursed. Genesis 3:17 (NASB), “…Cursed is the ground because of you…”  The climate has gotten worse.  However in Isaiah 35:1,2,6,7, we find a promise of good climate change. When Christ reigns, the wilderness and desert will be changed into flowering fields.  Acts 3:19-21(NASB) foretells the “Times of Restoration” when all that was lost due to father Adam’s sin will be restored to mankind. This includes the recovery of earth from the curse. Revelation 22:3, “There shall be no more curse.”

Spiritual blindness, greed, and “willing ignorance” (Isaiah 56:9-12; 2 Peter 3:5) are at the root of confusing the clear and irrefutable science on climate. There is no scientific debate that the green house gases of today’s air differ more than two-fold from the air breathed by George Washington.  There is no debate that once stable ice fields around the earth are vanishing – breaking apart in thunderous roars before our very eyes. Since 1957, a greenhouse gas observatory in Hawaii has measured the increasing concentrations year by year. Man and not nature has brought this change. Unintended consequences are the result.

The scientific community has warned that greenhouse gas increases would intensify storms, cause floods, droughts, forest fires, and expand invasive species such as insects and tropical diseases and lead to extinctions. Christ Jesus warned “Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved…”(Matthew 24:22).

We are supposed to watch over this beautiful gift of the earth as God’s stewards.  We have not done this wisely.

Storms, floods, etc. appear as biblical end time symbols — for the root of the problem is man’s alienation from God.  To those mindful of God’s word, these stark images may have both a spiritual, and in some cases, a literal fulfillment:

Nahum 1:3-5 “the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm…”

Luke 21:25, 26, “Upon the earth distress of nations with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”

Christ will topple earth’s sinful governments and organizations, but then mankind will be taught the joy of righteousness and earth will be healed:

Isaiah 19:4-22 “… the river shall be wasted and dried up… the LORD shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the LORD…”

Isaiah 55:12,13(NLT), “You will live in joy and peace. The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands! Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow. Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up. These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name; they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

Man’s extremity will be God’s opportunity!
