Lucifer (or Satan) spoke through the serpent. Why would Lucifer lie? Isaiah 14:12-14 (NKJV), “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground,…you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’”
Lucifer wanted power and a kingdom. He wanted to be a king over mankind. God never gave him that position, so he tried to usurp God’s position. He knew if Adam and Eve sinned, they would be cast out of the Garden of Eden. He knew they would be alienated from God. He knew they and all of their children would die, but he didn’t care. He wanted power. So he lied.
Jesus identified the devil as the father of lies. John 8:44 (ESV), “…He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
Our lesson is to obey and to humble ourselves before Jehovah God. Even when we may not understand why, let us always remember Jesus’s words in the Garden of Gethsemane, “not my will, but Thine, be done…” Luke 22:42.
