God is always open to bringing you closer to Him. “Draw nigh unto God and He will draw nigh to you,” James 4:8. He desires to bless, comfort, and nurture you. “The Lord is good to all; and his tender mercies are over all his works.” (Psalms 145:9) “…mercy and truth shall go before thy face.” (Psalms 89:14) “God is love.” (1 John 4:8) God takes pleasure in His creation. “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for you have created all things and for your pleasure they are and were created.” (Rev. 4:11)
God knew sinful people would be imperfect parents. He also knew our relationships with our natural fathers could make it difficult for us to love and trust our Heavenly Father. So, how do we learn to trust and love God or any person?
First we need to find out who He is. God gave us the Bible to teach us about Himself. The foundation of our relationship is the truth revealed in the Bible. Our feelings can change with the moment, but the Bible is fact and God never changes. (Malachi 3:6) So when I feel uncertain, I remember my messed-up feelings do not change God. God loves me.
Then tell God your needs. Tell Him you are struggling with trust. He will begin to direct things in your life to help you trust. If your eyes of faith are watching, you will see proofs of His love and care in many little things. A Bible verse will have deepened meaning; a mature Christian may share his life experiences; a child may grasp your hand and you will feel what trust feels like. As Jesus said, “If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” (John 14:23)
It is this experience of walking with God that will grow your trust in Him. Your daily habits of reading the Bible, obeying His word, praying your heart’s longings, seeing answered prayer, fellowshipping with mature Christians will slowly develop a strong, trusting bond with God.
