Mary, the mother of Jesus, never became God and she never will be Him. So, who is God? God is the creator of the universe, and His name is Jehovah, “That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the Most High over all the earth” (Psalm 83:18). He is the highest being in the universe. No one is greater than Him and no one is equal to Him. “To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One” (Isaiah 40:25). Even Jesus who 2,000 years ago walked on this earth was not God Jehovah. Jesus is God’s only begotten son (John 3:16) and was the contractor of his Father’s most powerful will. “…my Father is greater than I” (John 14:28).
Mary was the mother of Jesus. She was an ordinary yet remarkable Jewish woman who was chosen by God Jehovah to give birth to Jesus. Mary was a direct descendant of King David and must have had beautiful qualities in order for God to choose her. But when we read the contents of the Gospel and the apostolic letters, nowhere are we told to give special honor to Mary. Nowhere in the Bible she is called the mother of God. Instead, she is called the mother of Jesus (John 2:1). If Jesus is not God, then Mary could not be God’s mother, much less God herself.
Unfortunately, after the death of the apostles the Christian church began to add man’s ideas to the Scriptures and inserted new doctrines. They began to believe it was necessary to worship Mary. Sadly, this is idolatry. The only beings to whom we should pay homage are Jehovah, the Creator of the world, and Jesus Christ, the son of Jehovah. “Jesus answered, It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve Him alone.” (Luke 4: 8) “That all men should honor the son, even as they honor the Father. That he honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father Which hath sent him” (John 5:23).
