The Holy Spirit is not a person. God's Holy Spirit is the power of God working blessings in many different ways. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for spirit is "ruach" and it means wind or breath. Just as the wind is invisible yet very powerful, so God exerts His wise, powerful, invisible influence to do great things.

For example: God used His mighty power in creation. Genesis 1:1,2, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."

God used His spirit to help specially appointed Israelites to make the Tabernacle beautiful. One example is found in Exodus 31:2-5, "I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri…And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship."

God's power helped people to write the Holy Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16, "All scripture is inspired by God."

Presently, the Holy Spirit is begetting people to a new life. (John 3:3-8) Some people repent of their sins, accept Jesus as their Savior, and chose to follow in Jesus' footsteps by doing God's will. These may receive the Holy Spirit to become new creatures. Christians are transformed by God's power to become Christlike. Philippians 2:13, "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." (See also Romans 12:1,2) They will receive a heavenly reward in the resurrection.

During Christ's earthly reign, the Holy Spirit will be poured upon all mankind. Acts 2:17, "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams." In the Kingdom, people will not be begotten as new creatures. It will be through God's great power in His spirit that mankind will have the opportunity to be restored to perfection in body, mind, spirit, and heart. The earth will also become productive, beautiful, and magnificent. It will be a wonderful time. (Isaiah 35)
