Jerusalem is prominent in God’s plan for man. The Christian’s heart should long for and understand both the natural and spiritual meaning of Jerusalem.
The exiled Jews lamented the loss of Jerusalem. Psalm 137:5-6, “ If I forget you, O Jerusalem, May my right hand forget her skill. May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem above my chief joy.”
Today, Israel has been returned to the Jewish people. The city of Jerusalem was reunited in 1967, and declared the undivided and eternal capital of Israel in 1980.
Why does this matter to Christians? It is vitally important because the same God who restored the literal Jerusalem to the Jewish people is also creating a heavenly Jerusalem. The glorious heavenly Jerusalem is to be the Bride for his Son Jesus.
Revelation 21:2-4, “And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.’”
It is Jesus and His the Bride (the new Spiritual Jerusalem) who will bless all the families of the earth. God gave a glimmer of this doctrine in Genesis 12:3, “And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. and in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” Who is the “you”?
Galatians 3:29, “And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.”
Soon Christ will establish the literal Jerusalem as the capital of the world and all nations shall flow to it. Isaiah 2:1-3 (NKJV), “The word …concerning Judah and Jerusalem. Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the LORD’s house (Christ’s kingdom) shall be established on the top of the mountains (other nations) and shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”
