Jesus promises that the Comforter or the Holy Spirit will guide us to understand the truth (John 16:13). Spiritual truths cannot be understood and appreciated by a fleshly mind. If we understand the Plan of God and what he would have us do and the desire to do it – those are all gifts from above, coming from the Father, who does the calling, through the merit of Jesus, via the Holy Spirit.
Rom. 8:14-16 “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
1 Cor 2:9-10 “But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him"—these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.”
A person who has the Holy spirit (or “walks in the spirit” Gal. 5:16,17) will have a relationship to God thru regular prayer and will always look for the things of God instead of seeking selfish pleasures. Here are the qualities we should strive for when we walk in the Spirit and should see them growing in us:
Gal 5:22-25 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”
