Throughout the world today there are thousands and millions of people who firmly believe in what is known as “Spiritism.” Among these are some of the brightest minds of the day–doctors, lawyers, judges, professors, etc., a class of people who would not be deceived by mere sleight-of-hand performances, or by hallucinations. These know that it is possible to communicate with beings of the spirit realm, through the aid of spirit mediums, clairvoyants, and the like – the modern wizards and witches. Few recognize that every one of these spirit beings are demons, or fallen angels – evil spirits – whose aim and purpose is to deceive people by impersonating the dead, and representing themselves as the spirits of the departed ones.
Additionally, human wizards and witches may seek to develop relationships with these demons. Although we are unfamiliar with the powers of fallen angelic beings, we do know they have powers beyond what men have. Therefore, when witches "cast spells," they are calling upon demons to hurt mankind. Thankfully, "He that is for us is greater than he that is against us." (Romans 8:31) God can protect us from demons. We are instructed to "resist the Devil and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)
The Sacred Writers certainly recognized the existence of demons and witches (spirit mediums) in their day. We are to avoid all contact with any involved with spiritism.
