The Bible refers to other “days” which are not 24-hour periods. For example, we read of a forty-year day in Hebrews 3:8,9, “the day of temptation in the wilderness.” We are given the scriptural statement that “One day with the Lord is as a thousand years” (2 Peter 3:8)/ A year is sometimes spoken of as a day, as in, “I have appointed thee each a day for a year” (Ezekiel 4:6). In addition, the entire age of the gospel message going forth is called the “day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

When considering the statements of Genesis respecting the six creative days (periods of time), or “epochs,” we should not limit our thoughts to a 24-hour day. Accurate scientific evidence as seen in the fossil record illustrates that the creation of the earth followed a carefully organized development of our amazing planet. Genesis 1 and science are in complete agreement respecting this astonishing progression. No one but God could have communicated with the author of Genesis (probably Moses) the order of this accurate record. All other ancient tales of creation are simplistic, unscientific fables.

So, how long were these periods? Since the Bible is silent about their exact duration, we need to examine God’s footprints as left in the cosmos and the earth’s geologic record.
