ATR is a broad term that refers to the indigenous spiritual systems practiced across Africa. These vary widely by region and ethnic group but often believe in a supreme creator and emphasize the presence of spiritual beings including nature spirits and ancestral spirits that guide, protect or warn the living. Beliefs are passed down through stories, songs and ceremonies and may include rituals like dance, drums and festivals.
One branch of ATR is Voodoo (also known as Vodun or Vodou) that originated in West Africa and spread to other places like Haiti and New Orleans in the United States.
As Christians, we believe Jehovah God is the one and only true God and Jesus is His only begotten son, through which we can approach God. Any other worship is pagan at best and satanic worship at worst. Satan’s evil demons are active, trying to deceive humans in any way possible.
Some may say they feel power with ATR, but we believe this to be the power of evil. Avoid and run from evil, because “…your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith…” 1 Peter 5:8-9 (NKJV) But the demons will deceive and empower their followers. They will masquerade as helpers. Even “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). The safest course is to “submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:17).
Don’t let anyone deceive you. As Paul wrote, “If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing…from such withdraw yourself” (1 Timothy 6:3-5)
Why might professing Christians turn to African Tradition Religions? It may have to do with cultural familiarity and ancestral ties. In moments of deep distress, people might turn to what they know from their heritage and what is practiced around them. This might be out of love and identity of culture, or social pressure to participate in certain rituals out of respect. Perhaps its rituals and superstitions offer a more immediate solution to relieve suffering. They might be practicing a mix of ATR and Christianity, thinking this is okay to be on both sides. Perhaps they have been disillusioned with the leadership or congregation of their local church and feel spiritually neglected.
For whatever the reasons, we strongly encourage prayerful consideration, Bible study and strong Christian mentorship to assess what is true faith and how our God wants to be worshipped. Many have been deceived.
