Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest. This was His answer, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40 (ESV)

Thus God's Law of Love summarizes and fulfills all the Ten Commandments. We are to love God supremely and to love each other as ourselves.

Jesus even added a new commandment of love. Here Jesus stressed the importance of loving other believers when He instructed, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” John 13:34 (NKJV)

This commandment goes beyond loving our neighbor as ourselves. Just as Jesus died for us, we should be willing to die for each other. 1 John 3:14, 16 (NKJV), 14 “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren… 16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”

Therefore, the Ten Commandments definitely guide and benefit Christians. Furthermore, we should be willing to lay down our lives to serve the brethren and to glorify God.
